Photo of the Day: Flamingos in Bolivia Altiplano

Our 4-Day Tupiza to Uyuni tour in Bolivia, South America was filled with unique landscapes. We captured snow capped mountains, surreal deserts, eroded mountain ranges, glowing lakes and most importantly the largest Salt Flats in the world, Salar de Uyuni.

This picture is from day 3 of our tour which revealed hundreds of flamingos. Unfortunately we had a very thick overcast the first half of the day, which made the flamingos not so pink.

During our exploration of Northern Argentina we visited Salinas Grandes.  These are the largest Salt Flats in Argentina.  After driving out into the middle of the flats you get an amazing panoramic view of the area.  The contrast in colors between the blinding white salt and the rich blue sky is incredible and best captured in this black and white photo.

During our Tupiza to Uyuni Bolivia Salt Flats 4-day tour we witnessed incredible and varying scenery, such as this sunrise over the salt flats early the last morning. The white ground creates a very unique glow which is hard to experience elsewhere. If the clouds are clear enough, it may be the best sunrise you will ever experience.

Bolivia Sunrise

Uyuni Salt Flats Sunrise

I think it was during the first days of our trip.  We were in Guatemala having a conversation with Andy and Paulina, another traveling couple from England, when we first heard that the Uyuni Salt Flat Tour was amazing.  Bolivia was definitely in our plans but we try not to have an itinerary more than a few days ahead so at the time, there was no to-do list for our visit to Bolivia.

While traveling for a few months and meeting more travelers making their way up from the south of South America to the north, opposite of our route, we continued to hear great things about the Uyuni Salt Flats.  The destination quickly made its way up to my top three most anticipated events of this trip. Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and the famous archeological site of Machu Picchu were the others on that list.

I was not disappointed.  Everything we heard about the Salt Flats was true; it lived up to the expectation, which does not always happen with every place.  Not only was the experience one of a kind, but our guide was very informative, we met new friendly people, saw unique and unforgettable scenery and took over 750 pictures within a four days. Discover Arica, Chile

Giant Cliff in Arica

El Morro Cliff

Arica was the first town we arrived to in Chile coming from the north.  After researching our Lonely Planet Guide, it was a last minute decision that had us headed to Arica.  The description of what we could find in Chile’s Altiplano was enticing: town of Putre, Lauca National Park, Salar de Surire or Surire Saltbeds, pink flamingos, wild vicuñas and snow capped volcanoes.  Arica is a desert coastal town with beaches, cliffs and sand dune mountains.  It’s also a busy beach town with a small seaport, many tourism offices, shopping and surfing.
