Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru. It is located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipa. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States at 4,160 m. However, the canyon’s walls are not as vertical as those of the Grand Canyon. The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with towns founded in Spanish Colonial times and formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. The local people still maintain ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces. – Wikipedia

Photo of the Day: Canoa Beach Ecuador

| by Aracely | No Comments » | Photo of the Day

Canoa Beach on Ecuador’s Pacific Coast is the most underrated beach in Ecuador to Aracely and I. The wide flat sand beach stretches for miles with cliffs in the distance. Huts on the sand provide alcohol and music, while hostels on the street give backpackers a place to sleep and hang. Don’t miss this one!

Photo of the Day: Lake Chungara in Northern Chile’s Altiplano

| by Jason | No Comments » | Photo of the Day

Lake Chungará is situated in northern Chile, in Tarapacá Region.  It is the 29th highest lake in the world (and the 10th highest in South America).  It is near the volcanos Parinacota (20,827 feet or 6,348 meters) and Pomerape (20,413 feet or 6,222 meters).  It was formed 8000 years ago, when a major collapse of the edifice of Parinacota produced an avalanche of 6km³ of debris which blocked drainage pattern, thus creating the lake.

The situation of this lake is not very stable due to environmental issues nowadays, especially concerning potable water supply to dense population.  See the state on August 9, 2024. – Wikipedia

Photo of the Day: Sillustani Ruins in Peru

| by Aracely | No Comments » | Photo of the Day

Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial ground on the shores of Lake Umayo near Puno in Peru.  The tombs, which are built above ground in tower-like structures called chullpas, are the vestiges of the Colla people, Aymara who were conquered by the Inca in the 15th century.  The structures housed the remains of complete family groups, although they were probably limited to nobility.  Many of the tombs have been dynamited by grave robbers, while others were left unfinished. – Wikipedia

Convento de San Francisco is the Spanish name for Saint Francis Monastery located in Lima, Peru. The church was completed in 1774 and is noted for its architecture, a high example of Spanish Neoclassicism. The convent’s library is world-renowned. Catacombs below the monastery contain an ossuary and are said to connect to other catacombs beneath the cathedral and other area churches.

The church and convent are part of the Historic Centre of Lima, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991.
