San Pedro de Atacama is a Chilean town and commune in El Loa Province, Antofagasta Region. It is located east of Antofagasta, some 106 km (60 mi) southeast of Calama and the Chuquicamata copper mine, overlooking the Licancabur volcano. There are various activities for tourist and adventurers in the San Pedro de Atacama area: trekking, climbing, archaeological sightings, exploration tours in natural landscapes and even sand boarding in the desert. Because of its altitude, a brief period of acclimatization may be required.

This photo was taken in Guatin, which is just outside of San Pedro de Atacama, a small adventure tourist town located in Chile’s Atacama Desert.  We drove through Guatin during our Cactus and Geyser Tour with Cactus Expeditions.  The desert is flanked by snow capped mountains creating a brilliant contrast in landscapes and environments.

We visited the Cardon Cactus Valley during our trek with Cactus Excursions from San Pedro de Atacama. We learned that the Cardon Cactus is protected in Chile because of it’s slow growth. A cactus this tall is thousands of years old. The different “arms” that you see in the picture is actually a different Cardon Cactus growing on a cactus. The wind blows the see of the flower from cactus to cactus.

Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) is located 13 kilometers west of San Pedro in the Cordillera de la Sal, in the Atacama desert of Chile. It has various stone and sand formations which have been created through the centuries by floods and wind and has also given it an impressive range of color and texture, looking somewhat similar to the surface of the moon.
