The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps and where anything is possible – including having a great time on a budget. Backpacking in a big city can be pricey, especially in a prosperous country such as America. But it is possible to find cheap accommodation in New York City, to see the sights and experience life in New York without blowing your meager backpacker’s budget. After all, it costs nothing to soak up the atmosphere of bustling, neon light-filled Times Square, gaze up at the jagged skyscrapers, or watch the sun set over the Hudson River from Battery Park. The best of New York is completely free. Just when you didn’t think Times Square could get any brighter, New York City lights up during the holiday season. Rising up from the subway entrance in Times Square, Target Stores advertise in shinning red and white. We took that color scheme and spread it throughout this picture of Times Square NYC. Enjoy the Holidays everyone!

From atop the Empire State Building you can capture the best views of New York City’s midtown cityscape. On a clear night you can see the lights from New Jersey’s waterfront, all the bridges connecting Manhattan and Times Square lighting up Midtown’s skyscrapers.

The best views of the New York City skyline can be seen from Pier A Park in Hoboken, New Jersey. Lower Manhattan is now under heavy development, restoring sky scrapers at ground zero.
I love this picture of the Norwegian Cruise Line with the NYC skyline backdrop. The ships leave from a NYC port on the Hudson River side of the Manhattan.

One of the most popular things for tourists to do in New York City is visiting the Statue of Liberty.
Statue of Liberty National Monument is a national monument comprising Liberty Island and Ellis Island in New York Harbor.[4] It includes the Statue of Liberty, situated on Liberty Island (40°41′24″N 74°02′44″W / 40.689978°N 74.045448°W / 40.689978; -74.045448), and the former immigration depot on Ellis Island (40°41′57″N 74°02′23″W / 40.699300°N 74.039655°W / 40.699300; -74.039655). The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in 1886. The immigration station at Ellis Island opened in 1892 and closed in 1954. – Wikipedia
The Statue of Liberty Monument and Ellis Island are both accessible by ferry from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey and Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, New York. Plan a full day for this visit considering you have both Ellis Island, the immigration depot, and long lines for security at the Monument. The park has opened up service to the top of the crown, but tickets are sold ahead of time in limited quantities for each day.
