Photo of the Day: Sunrise Over Salt Flats in Bolivia

| Taken by Jason | 4 Comments » | Photo of the Day

During our Tupiza to Uyuni Bolivia Salt Flats 4-day tour we witnessed incredible and varying scenery, such as this sunrise over the salt flats early the last morning. The white ground creates a very unique glow which is hard to experience elsewhere. If the clouds are clear enough, it may be the best sunrise you will ever experience.

During our Tupiza to Uyuni Bolivia Salt Flats 4-day tour we witnessed incredible and varying scenery, such as this snow capped mountain in the background.  From the Toyota Land Cruiser window we saw desert, volcanic rock, glowing lakes, volcanoes and of course, the Uyuni Salt Flats.  The canyon below the mountains in the plains is a river gorge that was entirely dry.  During the rains it must flood incredibly in order to have created such a crack in the ground.

Photo of the Day: Plaza de Toros in Madrid

Throughout Spain bull fighting is still practiced today with just as much prestige as there was hundreds of years ago.   Madrid has one of the most famous arenas, Plaza de Toros.  The day Aracely and I visited the arena, a matador was gorged in the thigh 15 centimeters deep, just missing his main artery.  We still have the newspaper clipping from the day after the event.

Throughout much of Central and South America you will find the Spanish conquistador influence in architecture of major cities.  In the capital city of Quito, Ecuador buildings in the Historic Center or El Centro are distinctively Spanish colonial by design.  This particular building stood out with it’s bright colors, balconies and detail trim.

While driving through the wineries in Cafayate, Argentina parrots, or possibly parakeets, swarmed the pampas.  The plains seem to be the perfect nesting grounds for these loud groups of quick moving birds.  When they fly through the sky, turquoise colored wings glow against their bright green bodies.  This particular bird stood still long enough for us to capture a beautiful landscape with it as the star.

This train is a tourist attraction in Northern Argentina. Tren a las Nubes (or Train of the Clouds) takes a very long scenic stroll through the Salta region over bridges, viaducts as high as 4,200 m and the altiplano. The train doesn’t actually go to any specific town, it just takes it’s passengers to the end of the route on La Polvorilla Viaduct where artisan merchants sell their crafts for 30 minutes. Food and tour guides are both provided on the train.

During our exploration of Northern Argentina we visited Salinas Grandes.  These are not the largest Salt Flats in South America, but beautiful none the less.  After driving out into the middle of the flats you get an amazing panoramic view of the area.  The contrast in colors between the blinding white salt and the rich blue sky is incredible.
