| Taken by Aracely | No Comments » | Photo of the Day

La Catedral de León is the biggest cathedral in Central America. It is also the final resting place of Ruben Dario, as well as many other notable Nicaraguans. You can pay a small fee to climb the stairs up to the roof, where you can get a nice view of all of León’s churches and the surrounding volcanoes, and you can go into the cellars beneath the cathedral. – Wikipedia

Photo of the Day: A Train Cemetery in Bolivia

One of the major tourist attractions of the area is an antique train cemetery. It is located 3 km outside Uyuni and is connected to it by the old train tracks. The town served in the past as a distribution hub for the trains carrying minerals on their way to the Pacific Ocean ports. The train lines were built by British engineers who arrived near the end of the 19th century and formed a sizable community in Uyuni. The engineers were invited by British-sponsored Antofagasta and Bolivia Railway Companies, which is now Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia. The rail construction started in 1888 and ended in 1892. It was encouraged by the then Bolivian President Aniceto Arce, who believed Bolivia would flourish with a good transport system, but it was also constantly sabotaged by the local Aymara indigenous Indians who saw it as an intrusion into their lives. The trains were mostly used by the mining companies. In the 1940s, the mining industry collapsed, partly due to the mineral depletion. Many trains were abandoned thereby producing the train cemetery. – Wikipedia

| Taken by Jason | No Comments » | Photo of the Day

Shining shoes in Ecuador’s cities is a common tradition that is still maintained today. While visiting Plaza de La Independencia in Quito, we appreciated the moment of these two older guys conversing as the shoes were shined. Unfortunately, you will also see young boys and girls shining shoes for money as well.

As you travel from coast to coast in Costa Rica, be sure to visit the unique cloud forest region of Santa Elena and Monteverde. During our few days in the forest, we enjoyed a day tour in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, a night tour searching for sloths and the sky walk across the many suspension bridges that offer beautiful views of the thick forest floor.
