We arrived 2 days before the devastating floods. But, we decided to come back later in our journey since we would be backtracking North South in South America. It ended up working out well. The Salkantay trek and the Lars Trek are the hardest hikes to Machu Picchu. You can do an expensive hike that will include lodges, hot tubs etc. There are treks to Machu Picchu for every type of traveler.
